DESCRIPTION:
The Volunteer/ Companion/ Escort Program is designed to help homebound elders remain independent. Volunteers provide companion services to relieve loneliness. Volunteers also provide essential services including shopping assistance, escort to appointments, respite for caregivers, S.H.I.N.E (Serving Health Information Needs of Elders) counseling and telephone reassurance.
VOLUNTEERS CAN:
- Provide companionship
- Assist with shopping (i.e. groceries, prescriptions, etc.)
- Escort to appointments (i.e. doctor’s, social security, etc.)
- Engage in recreational activities (such as playing cards, letter writing, reading, music, crafts, hobbies)
- Prepare or serve a light meal or snack
- Provide a phone call for daily safety check or medication reminder
- Provide information regarding changes in health insurance
ELIGIBILITY:
- Persons aged 60 or older or persons under age 60 who are disabled.
- Willingness to accept the volunteers’ assistance
COST TO PARTICIPANTS:
There is no cost of services for State Home Care recipients. Clients who do not receive State Home Care services are given an opportunity to make a donation to the Volunteer Program.
